For 18 years, Sunset High School has put on an event called Cram the Stands. This tradition consists of two separate home basketball games, one for the girl’s team and one for the boy’s team, in honor of cancer awareness. These two games attract massive crowds and allow the Sunset student body to achieve maximum potential in terms of fundraising. Students collaborate with Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to pick an ambassador and Nike to help our ambassador design a T-Shirt for the special event. These shirts will be worn by the students to both games in support of the cause.
We raise money in a variety of ways. Businesses around Beaverton sponsor our event, and Sunset High School sells a T-Shirt designed by our yearly ambassador. We also hold fundraising events at Sunset High School, including selling food and holding an auction. All of this money raised is donated directly to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, to be used for Pediatric Cancer Awarness and Research.
Pediatric cancer only receives 4% of federal cancer research funds. Our goal as a community is to decrease this deficit by raising money for our ambassadors each year while also raising pediatric cancer awareness.
Every year we work together with Doernbecher to find a young patient to be our Cram The Stands Ambassador. This ambassador will aid in creating the t-shirts at Nike, go to the Varsity basketball practices, be in the assembly, and will be our V.I.P at the girl’s and boy’s games.
