In August 2019, when Sevai was 11, she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma is a rare bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Her cancer first developed in her left knee as a lump. Sevai fought through months of pain in her knee and endured chemotherapy and in November 2019, she had a limb-saving surgery that required a total knee replacement and a prosthetic in her thigh. It took many months to learn how to walk with her new leg, but Sevai was a trooper and in April 2020, she finished her chemotherapy. Osteosarcoma requires scans after treatment is done to make sure cancer does not return. In June 2020, Sevai was in remission, but unfortunately, her cancer returned. She found out four days after her 13th birthday (in September 2020), that her lungs had two nodules in them. She has had double lung surgery to remove the nodules, but we still await her next scans.
Despite her cancer struggles, Sevai is still attending middle school in Portland. She finds her escape in art and video games. Sevai is an incredible artist and loves to draw cartoons, her most recent being a drawing of Pikachu! Like many kids, she also loves video games such as Fortnite and Call of Duty. We were fortunate enough to be able to meet with Sevai through Zoom and we instantly noticed how bright and funny she is! She has already been through more than most people go through in their lifetime, yet she is still so strong and positive. She is incredibly brave and is ready to conquer whatever life throws her way.
Like almost everything this year, Cram the Stands looked different. We celebrated Osteosarcoma Cancer research in honor of Sevai. We held a Drive-In family event with teachers and had performances by Sunset's cheer squad, dance team, and choir. Together we raised over $13,000.
