During the summer of 2021, while participating in a basketball camp, Sabina started experiencing pain in her right knee. Thinking it was just growing pains, she pushed through to complete the camp. After the pain persisted for several more weeks and grew more intense, an X-ray revealed that Sabina’s pain was actually caused by Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her femur. So far, Sabina’s treatment has included four months of chemotherapy cycles and a resection surgery in December of 2021 that removed the tumor by replacing half of her femur and knee, down to the top of her tibia, with titanium internal prosthetics. Even while recovering from surgery, Sabina continued several more rounds of chemotherapy. In the meantime, Sabina thrives on the energy she draws from being around others.
She is a huge fan of music and theater. That means she spends hours and hours singing Taylor Swift songs and tunes from “Hamilton.” She also writes songs and plays music on the piano. Sabina has not let her diagnosis diminish her desire to help others. She knows what it feels like when cancer throws someone’s life upside down, and how sick and scared kids get during treatment.
Due to Covid, Cram the Stands had to go a different direction and put together a more interactive-style event that took place outdoors. The event had performances from both Sunset basketball teams, the cheer team, dance team, and a heartwarming presentation to meet our ambassador. This year we were able to raise $34,000 to fund research for Pediatric Osteosarcoma Cancer.
Sabina's goal for this year’s Cram the Stands event is to raise awareness about the stories of all kids with cancer -- not just her own personal journey — and support research, treatment and funding to help pediatric cancer patients now and to come.
